Entropy tiser

This model was done by Michael Khizhnyakov. Michael is film director and this robot was created for his new project ‘Entropy’, the task of texturing and visualization was assigned to our studio. The main wish of the client was the ultimate realism of the created material, we had to take into consideration his way of moving (the robot can fly) and location where it appears. Since the action takes place in a building that was abandoned many years ago, its appearance must be properly muddy.

The original model consists of more than 600 parts and was not UV unwrapped. We had decided to create PBR material, because of its flexibility and easy transferring across several render engines. The required level of detail of the robot, which determined the further division of the model into materials and the resolution of the textures necessary for high-quality display of material , were calculated based on the storyboard provided by Michael.

The creation process was consistent: at first we made basic materials and then added some dirt, dust and scratches. We had justified distribution of dirt parts according to their openness and their location during motion, the rocket engine should leave marks of smoke on the near surfaces. The problem was to gain realistic and attractive look simultaneously, thus this robot was made for fictional film. Such consistency allows to have several versions of material and to use appropriate for certain step.

Robot after visualization was mounted in the video clip that was directed by Michael but in one of the frame had to abandon the real shooting in favor of a fully CG shot.. For this shot we have to model part of concrete wall with windows that is similar to existed one. Materials of this wall are also PBR. Due to defocus we could lower texture resolution, overall level of details and the amount of time we spent on this object.

This project was challenging and demands rather big efforts but it didn’t set limitations to our artistic freedom. We also appreciate cooperation with Michael and wish him luck with his new project.
