Procedural Wood Tiles

In this project we have to create complex material for wooden tile. In its production can be used several types of wood. The number and shape (square, hexagonal, rhomboid, etc.) of the tile parts can vary. According to this, it was necessary to obtain material with maximum flexibility and ease of editing, then render it in the desired interior.

As a result, was created a completely procedural PBR (physical based render) material, without using any raster images, which can be easily adjusted for different projects. The basis of tiles was set, according to customer’s request, to 7X7 size matrix. Each separate block that form the tile is unique what appears in texture, its color and physical properties.

Various cutting techniques were taken into account during creation, which, along with the place (especially the knot or trunk), are of decisive importance for appearance and characteristics. For example, rift cut is characterized by longitudinal lines of fibers, the plain sliced piece of wood by radial, and rotary cut – by a complex, strongly curved pattern. Elements vary in the level of manufacturing, which appears in different interactions with light (by using different setting roughness). At the same time, each color tone had to correspond to a certain degree of manufacturing: dark blocks should be lacquered, midtone – polished, light – untreated.

These reasons determine the color distribution of the elements which is also important feature of this tile – it was necessary to follow clearly the following relations: 23 light, 19 midtone and 7 dark blocks, which is technically more difficult than random generation.

The final textures, the parameters of which are exposed to the size of the wall in the interior.
